How to get it right
- Plant 60-80 cm apart for a dense screen that fills in fast.
- For a looser, more natural windbreak, 1-1.2 m apart is plenty.
- Plant on a slight mound in heavy soil so winter water runs away from the crown.
Where most people slip up
- Planting too far apart and waiting years for gaps to close.
- Planting hard against a wall, where reflected heat and dry soil stress the plant.
