Spekboom in short

Spekboom takes pruning well — cut it at the right time and you get a denser hedge plus free material for new plants.

How to get it right

  • Prune in spring and early summer, while the plant is actively growing.
  • Cut back to a leaf node or branch fork; leaving stubs invites dieback.
  • Keep every cutting longer than 10 cm — they root easily and cost you nothing.

Where most people slip up

  • Hacking into a hedge in the middle of winter when growth has stopped.
  • Shearing only the outer skin of the hedge, which leaves a hollow, woody centre.
