Spekboom in short

You do not need a farm to grow spekboom — a sunny balcony is enough for a productive, useful plant.

How to get it right

  • Choose a pot at least 25 cm wide with a proper drainage hole.
  • Group pots together to shade the soil surface and cut down evaporation.
  • Turn the pot a quarter-turn every few weeks so it does not lean into the light.

Where most people slip up

  • Using tiny pots that dry out and cook the roots on a hot day.
  • Standing pots in saucers of water through winter.

Living and growing plants in the Garden Route

AloeRoots grows and sells spekboom and aloes from Wilderness in the Garden Route. Every plant we send out is grown here, in this climate — the same wet winters and salty wind your garden has to live with.
