How to get it right
- Use a mix of roughly two parts potting soil to one part coarse sand or perlite.
- Always use a pot with a real drainage hole; a decorative outer pot must not trap water.
- Move pots under cover during long wet spells and reduce watering to almost nothing in winter.
Where most people slip up
- Filling the bottom of the pot with stones instead of improving the mix — it raises the water table, it does not drain.
- Feeding heavily: rich soil pushes soft growth that breaks in wind.
